Harris and Harris sent me a letter but never validated the debt, what now?

birimox
Got a collection letter from Harris and Harris about 6 weeks ago for a utility bill I don't even recognize. I sent them a written dispute and validation request via certified mail within the 30 day window. I have the return receipt showing they got it. Since then I have heard nothing back from them on paper, but the calls have actually picked up. They are calling 4 or 5 times a day now and left a voicemail yesterday that mentioned the account balance, which I thought they were not supposed to do if someone else could hear it.

I also pulled my credit report and saw they reported the collection to all three bureaus before they ever validated anything with me. From what I have read, they are supposed to stop collection efforts until they provide the validation. I have been documenting every call with date, time, and number but I am not sure if that is enough or if I need to do something more formal.

I disputed with the credit bureaus too but that is still pending. Honestly I am exhausted by the constant calls and I am starting to think I need to talk to someone who actually knows this stuff. Has anyone dealt with the validation angle specifically with this company? Did they ever send you the proof or did you end up needing an attorney?
