LX88 Review: The Hall-Effect Keyboard That Redefines What a Mechanical Board Can Do
The mechanical keyboard market is flooded with options that all claim to be the last keyboard you will ever buy. Most of them are lying. The LX88 from the peripheral maker Apex Forge is different, and after six weeks of daily use, I can say that with confidence. It is not the prettiest board I have tested, not the most compact, and not the cheapest. It is, however, the most adaptable, and that versatility changes how you think about the device sitting on your desk. Let me start with the core technology because that is where the LX88 separates itself from the crowd. Instead of traditional mechanical switches that rely on metal contacts to register a keystroke, the LX88 uses Hall effect sensors mounted directly on the PCB. Each keycap sits above a magnet, and when you press down, the sensor measures the changing magnetic field to determine exactly how far the key has traveled. There is no physical contact, no debounce delay, and no wear on electrical components. The rated lifespan is 200 million keystrokes per switch, which is roughly twice what you get from a premium Cherry MX or Gateron switch. That magnetic sensing opens up features that fixed mechanical switches simply cannot offer. In the companion Apex One software, you can set a different actuation point for every single key, anywhere from 0.1 mm to 3.8 mm of travel. I run my WASD cluster at 0.3 mm for instant reactions in shooters, then set the spacebar to 1.5 mm so I do not accidentally jump when my palm brushes the board. The LX88 also supports rapid trigger, which resets the actuation point the moment you begin releasing the key. In practice, this means you can tap the same key multiple times in a row with almost no loss of travel distance, something no classic switch can reproduce. Performance numbers back up the feel. The board polls at 8,000 Hz, eight times the rate of most gaming keyboards, which translates to a theoretical input latency of roughly 0.125 ms. I measured the actual end-to-end latency with a high-speed camera setup at 0.6 ms on a wired connection, and 1.1 ms over the included 2.4 GHz dongle. Bluetooth drops that to around 8 ms, which is still acceptable for typing but not something I would rely on for competitive play. For comparison, the popular Razer Huntsman V3 Pro, which costs about 220 dollars, delivers around 1.4 ms in the same test. The LX88 sells for 189 dollars and beats it by a noticeable margin. Build quality is where the LX88 shows its personality. The case is milled from a single block of 6063 aluminum and weighs 1.4 kilograms, which gives it a rigidity that plastic boards cannot match. There is zero flex when you twist the frame, even after a month of aggressive typing sessions. The keycaps are double-shot PBT with a 1.5 mm wall thickness, so the legends will not fade and the surface resists the greasy shine that plagues cheaper ABS caps. The board comes with three keycap sets in the box: the default black, a dark grey set, and a set of red accent keys that includes an alternate Enter keycap. That small attention to detail is rare at this price point. The gasket mounting system deserves attention too. The LX88 sandwiches the switch plate between two layers of poron foam, which absorbs the harsher bottom-out impact and gives the board a bouncy, almost cushioned feel. It is not the muted thock that enthusiasts on higher-end boards chase, but it is far quieter than the clacky tone you get from a stiff tray-mounted design. Factor in the pre-installed sound dampening foam in the base, and the LX88 measures about 58 decibels at peak typing volume, which is roughly the same as a normal conversation. If you share an office or a bedroom, that matters. Software is often the weak point of keyboards in this segment, but Apex One handles the LX88 well. The interface is a single window with no hidden sub-menus, and all 88 keys are remappable, including the FN layer. You can store up to five complete profiles on the onboard 8 MB memory, which works across Windows, macOS, and Linux without needing the software installed. I configured one profile for work, one for Valorant, and one for the build-heavy typing I do daily. Switching between them takes one keypress and about 0.3 seconds. I only wish the software allowed per-key RGB lighting independent of the actuation profiles, because the south-facing LEDs wash out the legends on certain keycap combinations. That is a minor gripe, but it is worth noting if you plan to use aftermarket keycaps. Who should buy the LX88? If you play fast-paced shooters like Valorant or Counter-Strike 2, the rapid trigger and adjustable actuation give you a genuine competitive advantage, not a marketing gimmick. If you type for a living, the cushioned gasket feel and quiet acoustic profile keep your hands comfortable across eight-hour sessions. And if you are the kind of person who likes to tinker, the option to swap between wired, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth across three devices makes the LX88 one of the most flexible boards I have tested this year. There are more exotic options like the Wooting 60HE, which offers similar Hall effect technology in a smaller form factor, but those cost around 175 dollars before you add keycaps and a case, and you lose the dedicated arrow keys and function row that the LX88 layout preserves. No keyboard is perfect, and the LX88 has its flaws. The plastic carrying case feels cheap against the aluminum body it protects. The USB-C cable is braided but stiff, and the RGB lighting can only reach around 85 percent brightness before colors start to desaturate. But those are comforts, not core compromises. The LX88 delivers the essential things at a price that quietly undercuts its direct competitors. After six weeks, I have stopped looking at other boards. That is the strongest endorsement I can give. If the LX88 is the shape of things to come, the traditional mechanical switch has a very short runway left, and honestly, I am not sorry to see it go. |
